Hot Tip: Check Out the First 5 Ingredients!

So, here’s the scoop: the first five ingredients in a product tell you a lot about what’s inside. They’re listed from the most to the least, which basically shows you what the product is mostly made of.

If you see these ingredients first:

  • Water

  • Alcohol

  • Fragrance / Parfum

  • Silicones

Then, chances are the formula is loaded with fillers instead of the good stuff you really want!

What to look for instead

When you're looking for products that are good for your scalp and skin, here are some ingredients to keep an eye out for:

  • Aloe

  • Oils (like coconut, jojoba, argan)

  • Butters (think shea and cocoa)

  • Herbal and plant extracts

  • Hydrosols

  • Botanicals

These goodies mean the product is packed with nutrients!

Cheap Preservatives

What to Watch For

  • Methylparaben

  • Ethylparaben

  • Propylparaben

  • Butylparaben

  • Isobutylparaben

  • Isopropylparaben

  • Benzylparaben

Sometimes Listed As

  • p-hydroxybenzoic acid

  • 4-hydroxybenzoate

  • parahydroxybenzolate

Effects

These preservatives can mess with your hormones, increase breast cancer risks, and cause fertility issues. They can also contribute to PMS and irregular cycles.

PHTHALATES

They make scents and plastics soft and durable!

Keep an Eye Out For:

  • DEP (diethyl phthalate)

  • DBP (dibutyl phthalate)

  • DEHP

Sometimes They’re Sneaky and Show Up As:

  • Fragrance

  • ParTun

  • Aroma

  • Plasticizers

These guys are linked to some serious health issues like infertility, thyroid problems, developmental issues, hormone imbalances, and endocrine system troubles.

(By the way, they’re banned in the EU but still allowed in the US!)

Fragrance

If you see a label that just says "Fragrance" or "Perfume," here's the deal: they can actually hide about over 4,000 chemicals in there!

What does "Fragrance" really mean? It can include:

  • Phthalates

  • Allergens

  • Skin irritants

  • Hormone disruptors

To keep things simple and safe, look for products that are:

  • Fragrance-free

  • Naturally scented with essential oils

  • Phthalate-free

Silicones in Hair Care

Silicones are great for making your hair look shiny and smooth, but keep in mind, they’re more of a quick fix than a real solution.

Common Silicones

  • Dimethicone

  • Cyclomethicone

  • Amodimethicone

  • Trimethicone

Be aware that while silicones can make your hair look nice, they can also create buildup. This buildup can block moisture from getting into your hair shaft, which might lead to dryness, frizz, and even scalp congestion over time.

What to Look For

If you're going to use silicones, try to choose water-soluble ones. They’re easier to wash out and won't leave your hair feeling weighed down.

PEGS

(Polyethylene Glycols)

PEGs are used to give products that creamy texture and help all the ingredients mix together nicely. But here's the catch: they can sometimes be contaminated with carcinogens, which isn’t great. Plus, they can make your skin more absorbent, meaning they might let in some unwanted toxins. If you have a sensitive scalp, PEGs can be pretty irritating too.

To avoid all that, keep an eye out for products that are PEG-free and ethoxylate-free.

SLS = Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

SLS is a common ingredient that's known for being a harsh cleansing agent. It strips away natural oils, which can trigger irritation and mess with your scalp barrier. This can leave your hair and scalp feeling dry and unhappy.

Instead, look for gentler surfactants like:

  • Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate

  • Cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine

  • Coco glucoside

Petroleum / Mineral Oils

You'll find these guys hanging out in a lot of styling products and moisturizers.

They create a barrier that traps heat and bacteria, which isn’t ideal.

Plus, they kind of smother your scalp, not letting it breathe.

Instead of hydrating, they just coat your hair.

And watch out—they can clog your follicles!

So, what are some better options?

Try shea butter, mango butter, plant oils, aloe gel, or jojoba oil
